Abstract

This paper investigates the way Kurds are represented by non-Kurds, particularly Turks, in English-language Twitter posts, using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as its main framework. It looks into how processes like othering, dehumanization, and ethnic hostility are constructed and spread through digital discourse. It also aims to assess how severe and intense this discourse is.
To collect data, snowball and purposive sampling methods were used to gather 530 comments replying to 12 pro-Kurdish tweets posted by public figures between 2018 and 2025. The analysis combines both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Fairclough’s CDA framework, applied through a netnographic lens, is used to qualitatively examine the data and address the first two research questions. At the same time, a quantitative content analysis is conducted using Bahador’s Hate Speech Intensity Scale to measure the level of hostility in the comments.
The findings reveal that nearly 40% of the analyzed comments exhibit high to extreme levels of hate speech, including demonization, incitement to violence, and explicit death threats. Common discursive tactics include labeling Kurds as “terrorists,” denying the existence of Kurdish identity or statehood, and equating cultural recognition with political threat.
The study concludes that Twitter, as a widely accessible public platform, provides space for expressing ethnic bias through language shaped by underlying nationalist ideologies. By integrating a measurable hate speech scale into a qualitative framework, the study contributes to a better understanding of digital discrimination and offers useful insights into how harmful discourse can be addressed and how ethnic conflict might be prevented.

ئەم توێژینەوەیە ڕێگای نیشاندانی کورد لەلایەن ناکوردەکان، بەتایبەتی تورکەکان، لە کۆمێنتەکانی تویتەر بە زمانی ئینگلیزی دەخاتە ڕوو، بە تایبەتی لە ڕوانگەی شیکردنەوەی گوتاریی ڕەخنەیی (CDA). هەوڵ دەدات بۆ ئەوەی بزانێت چۆن پڕۆسەکانی "ئەویترکردن" (othering)،نامرۆڤکردن، و کینەی نەتەوەیی لە دیسکۆرسی دیجیتاڵیدا دروست دەکرێن و بڵاودەکرێنەوە. هەروەها، ئامانجی ئەوەیە ڕاددەی توندییەتی ئەو دیسکۆرسە هەڵبسەنگێنێت.
بۆ کۆکردنەوەی داتا، سامپڵینی "تۆپەڵەبەفر" (snowball) و سامپڵینی مەبەستدار (purposive sampling) بەکارهاتووە بۆ کۆکردنەوەی ٥٣٠ کۆمێنت لە وەڵامەکانی ١٢ پۆستی تویتەری پاڵپشتیکەری کورد کە لەلایەن کەسایەتییە گشتییەکانەوە لە نێوان ساڵانی ٢٠١٨ بۆ ٢٠٢٥ نووسراوە. داتاکە بە هەردوو ڕێگای چۆنییەتی و چەندییەتی شیکردنەوە دەکرێت. بە بەکارهێنانی چوارچێوەی CDAی فێرکلاف، لە ڕوانگەی نێتنۆگرافییەوە، داتاکە بە شێوەیەکی چۆنییەتی شیکردنەوە دەکرێت بۆ وەڵامدانەوەی دوو پرسیاری یەکەمی توێژینەوەکە. لە هەمان کاتدا، شیکردنەوەیەکی چەندییەتی بەکارهاتووە بۆ دیاریکردنی پلەی توندی ڕق و کینە لەسەر بنەمای پێوەری پلەبەندیی ڕەهاڵەی قسەی ڕق (Bahador’s Hate Speech Intensity Scale).

ئه نجامه كان دەريانخست نزيكەی ٤٠٪ كۆمێنتەكان ئاستى بەرز تا زۆر بەرزى رقيان هەیە، له نێویاندا (demonization)، هاندان بۆ توندوتيژی، هەڕەشەی راستەوخۆی كوشتن. هەندێک لە تایبەتمەندییە باوەکانی دیسکۆرسەکە بریتین له ناونانی كورد وەک "تيرۆریست"، ڕەتکردنەوەی بوونى ناسنامه يان دەوڵەتی كوردى، و یەكسانكردنى ناساندنى كلتورى كوردى له گەڵ هەڕەشەی سياسى.
دەرەنجامی توێژینەوەکە ئەوە دەخاتەڕوو کە تویتەر پلاتفۆرمێکی گشتییە کە ڕێگە بە دەربڕینی لایەنگیری نەتەوەیی و ڕەچەڵەکی دەدات لە ڕێگەی ڕەفتاری زمانەوانییەوە کە لەسەر بنەمای ئایدۆلۆژییە شاراوەکانی نەتەوەپەرستییەوە ڕێکخراون. بە تێهەڵکێشکردنی پێوەرێکی ژمارەیی قسەی ڕق لەناو چوارچێوەیەکی چەندێتییەوە، ئەم توێژینەوەیە یارمەتی خوێندنەوەی ڕەخنەیی دەدات لەڕێگەی جیاکاری دیجیتاڵی و ئەنجامێکی کرداری بەدیدەهێنێت بۆ کۆنتڕۆڵکردنی دیسکۆرسی زیانبەخش و ڕێگرتن لە بەیەکدادانی نەتەوەیی.
