Abstract
The relationship between language patterns and mental and psychological state is important for understanding how linguistic expressions reflect cognitive and psychological conditions of the character in a literary work. This study deals with the analysis of the language patterns or more specifically the speech of the characters in Bench Seat, a one-act play by Neil LaBute, to uncover the cognitive dissociation in them showing their mental and psychological state. To analyze the linguistic expressions stylistically through the examination of the external deviations that the text displays, the study follows a stylistic framework (the foundational stylistic approach) of Leech and short (2007) and the cognitive poetic theory developed by Stockwell (2002). The analysis of the selected text illustrates how the speech of the female character deviates from everyday language by having disconnected patterns, incomplete sentences, broken syntax etc. These linguistic irregularities suggest that there is what is called cognitive dissociation that reflects the characters mental, psychological, and inner conflicts. Thus, LaBute employs language's ' external deviation' to show the inner world of his characters; to make deviant language stands for the inner conflict. The research concludes by asserting the function of external deviation as a textual means to portray the mental and psychological disturbance with the references using the Harvard documentation style.

پەیوەندی نێوان شێوازەکانی زمان و باری دەروونی زۆر گرنگە بۆ تێگەیشتن لەوەی کە چۆن هەڵبژاردنە زمانییەکان ڕەنگدانەوەی بارودۆخی مەعریفی و دەروونی کارەکتەرە لە بەرهەمێکی ئەدەبیدا. ئەم توێژینەوەیە ئامانجی شیکردنەوەی شێوازەکانی زمانە یان بە تایبەتیتر قسەکردنی کارەکتەرەکانی فیلمی Bench Seat یە کە شانۆنامەیەکی یەک ئەکتەی نیل لابوتە، بۆ ئەوەی جیابوونەوەی مەعریفییان ئاشکرا بکات کە ئاماژەیە بۆ باری دەروونی و دەروونییان. بۆ شیکردنەوەی شێوازەکانی زمان بە شێوەیەکی ستایلیستی لە ڕێگەی پشکنینی ئەو لادانە دەرەکیانەی کە دەقەکە پیشانی دەدات، لێکۆڵینەوەکە چوارچێوەیەکی ستایلیستی دەگرێتەبەر بە بەکارهێنانی ڕێبازی ستایلیستی بنەڕەتی لیچ و شۆرت (2007) و تیۆری شیعری مەعریفی کە لەلایەن ستۆکوێڵ (2002) پەرەی پێدراوە. شیکاری وردی دەقی ئەوە دەردەخات کە چۆن قسەکردنی کارەکتەری مێینە لە زمانی ڕۆژانە لادەچێت بە هەبوونی نەخشەی پچڕاو، ڕستەی ناتەواو، ڕستەسازیی شکاو و هتد. ئەم ناڕێکییە زمانەوانیانە ئاماژەن بۆ ئەوەی کە شتێک هەیە پێی دەوترێت جیابوونەوەی مەعریفی کە ئاوێنەیەکی ململانێی دەروونی و دەروونی و ناوەکی کارەکتەرەکانە. بەم شێوەیە لابوت زمان ' لادانێکی دەرەکی' بەکاردەهێنێت بۆ ئەوەی جیهانی ناوەوەی کارەکتەرەکانی لێبدات؛ بۆ ئەوەی زمانی لادان واتای ناوەکی ناڕێک و پێک بێت. توێژینەوەکە بە جەختکردنەوە لەسەر ئەرکی لادانێکی دەرەکی وەک ئامرازێکی دەقی بۆ وێناکردنی تێکچوونی دەروونی و دەروونی بە ئاماژەگەلێک کە بە بەکارهێنانی شێوازی وەرگێڕانی هارڤارد بەڵگەدار کراوە، کۆتایی دێت.
